I was delighted to learn that you are the 2003 recipient of the Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award from the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientist. Your many scientific contributions, especially those related to in vitro: in vivo extrapolation and, more recently, membrane transporters have been outstanding, and have had a major influence on the discipline. In addition, your efforts to bring the Japanese pharmaceutical sciences into the broader global community have been exemplary. The distinction is, therefore, highly meritorious and appropriate.

Finally, and on a more personal note, I have enjoyed the personal interactions that we have had, over many years, and I treasure our friendship ? long may they continue.
