| Heartfelt congratulations to Professor Sugiyama for receiving the Distinguished Researcher Award from the American Association of Pharmaceutial Scientists. Professor Sugiyama is not only an outstanding scientist but also a unique human being with the best qualities of head and heart. He is a good natured fellow and the students and the staff of his unit should take pride that they are guided by such an outstanding human being. Professor Sugiyama is a true visionary leader who is a boon to pharmaceutical sciences and I am very fortunate to call him a dear friend. Please see the attached picture which is the 'tip of the iceberg' of how many activities Professor Sugiyama undertakes and influences. The International Pharmaceutical Federation-Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences is fortunate to have such a visionary leader to influence it direction and activities. I am confident that Professor Sugiyama efforts will lead to a very successful PSWC2004 conference in Kyoto and we are very fortunate that Professor Sugiyama is the Chairman of this conference.
